WIP Wednesday

I've been making slow but steady progress on the hubby's socks this week. It's been tricky trying to keep them a surprise, seeing as how my knitting time usually happens in the evening when he's home. They're coming very nicely though.

Also on the needles this week: mittens for the kidlets and a fuzzy, warm winter bonnet.

{This Moment} Warmth

Nothing says "Winter has arrived!" quite like diapers and woolies drying by the fire.

WIP Wednesday

I've got a couple of projects in the works this week, trying to finish up my Christmas crafting. First is something that my hubby has been requesting for years now:
A pair of handknit socks. I'm using a pattern that calls for aran weight yarn so I can speed through them and be sure to finish in time for Christmas. He spends a lot of time outdoors in the winter, chopping wood to heat the house. These wool socks ought to keep his feet toasty warm.

I'm also on my third pair of Action Fingers for my older nieces. They're fun and trendy, and they knit up quickly. An excellent Christmas gift for any age!

WIP Wednesday

This week feels like a dishrag kind of week. I've got a garterlac dishrag on my needles at the moment

and just need to weave in the ends of this Revenge of Dishrag Tag dishrag.

WIP Wednesday

Finally pulling these cabled longies out of hibernation. My poor little man is quickly growing right out of his woolies and desperately needs some new ones that actually reach down to his ankles.

These are made with Lion Brand Wool-ease. They'll be durable and easy to care for, which is great for toddler-wear.

WIP Wednesday

Because sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day for photographing and uploading, I give you WIP Thursday!

My WIP this week is an owlie sleep sack that I'm knitting for a baby gift. Hopefully I've got enough yarn to do an owlie hat as well. I'm making this using Buena Lana single-ply merino wool.

WIP Wednesday

I figured with all of the WIPs that I've constantly got going at one time, it only made sense for me to participate in the weekly blog posts for "WIP Wednesday".

So without further ado, my WIP for this week:

Right now I'm working on a "Fiesta" Bloom tunic for Faith. The vibrant colors that make up this tunic were inspired, of course, by her loud and riotous personality. She already loves it, and it's so rewarding to knit something for someone who is so appreciative of my work.

30 seconds...

I have come to the conclusion that motherhood is mostly about living in controlled chaos. There are about 30 seconds out of every hour when a mother stands back, looks at her children in awe, admiration, and infatuation and everything just seems... right.

The rest of the time? Well that's spent pulling children off of ceiling fans, wiping runny noses, breaking up fights, and chasing defiant (and naked) toddlers through the house, diaper in hand.

But those 30 seconds... we live for those 30 seconds of beautiful calm, when we are able to watch the wonder fill their eyes as they delight in the fact that water and dirt combine to make mud puddles, or that kitties really do sit and purr quietly when you pet them gently. Those 30 seconds can put the rest of the chaos into perspective in an instant.

Tingling!

Oh the anticipation!! The air is ripe and crisp. My fingers tingle with excitement. It's like Christmas Morn' or the night before the first day of school... It's like preparing for the Olympics!! Okay... maybe its not all that extreme, but it's still pretty big news. Teams have been assigned for Dish Rag Tag 2010! I am a proud member of Team 7. The next 2 weeks are all about planning and strategizing... Visualizing the win! Oh, there I go again. You'll have to forgive me. It's hard not to get carried away during the weeks before your first knitting relay race!

You can follow my team's progress in the fancy litle widget on the right, there under the DRT button. Many more updates to come!

"You're It!!!"

I just signed up for "Dish Rag Tag" and I am PUMPED! It's like a knitter's relay race. Instead of passing a baton, team members mail a completed dishrag and a skein of yarn to each other. You get to keep the dishrag and then you knit a new one using the yarn provided, and mail it to the next team member.

I know what you're thinking, "say wha...?" or maybe "oh dear... someone get this poor girl a life!" or perhaps, you're like me and your first thought instead is "Ooooh! Ooooh! Oooh! I wanna play too!!" If you're one of the latter, click on the button above to sign up. Hurry! There are only a few spots left!

This Bad Mama...

This bad mama just put her baby to bed, covered from head to toe in food stickies.

This bad mama didn't believe her little girl was *really* sick until she noticed the little girl was actually quite feverish.

This bad mama bought, not one, but *two* packs of storebought cookies at the store today and then sat in the back hatch and quietly ate a handful while the kids sat patiently in their seats, totally oblivious to the injustice going on in their own minivan...

This bad mama has two loads of laundry to do before bed, because she chose to make popsicles this afternoon instead of checking off her chore list.

Then this bad mama will snuggle up next to her sweet littles, and sleep soundly, knowing that tomorrow brings a whole new day with a whole new list of mistakes yet to be made.

Finding Peace...

(Delish chicken dish from the menu mailer I subscribed to)

We had another successful salmon dinner last night. It was another garlic-y dish. I think that’s what’s keeping me from gagging on the fish taste. I am NOT a big fan of fish, usually. The garlic really seems to take the edge off. This week we’re trying “Thyme and Tomato Salmon”. I’m not sure how I’ll like that one, but I’m willing to try! I can't rave enough about www.cookingtf.com. We haven’t a “bad” recipe yet from these mailers. We’ve had a few that were even really big hits.

I also (finally) got around to making some sourdough bread and it came out GREAT! (would you believe I'd never even tried it before? I didn't think I would like it.) I’m going to try making some sourdough pretzels soon.

It’s amazing what this menu mailer has done for me. I still get to enjoy trying new, exciting and HEALTHY recipes, but I don’t have the stress of planning them myself. No food is wasted and everything is SO healthy! I’m sprouting my beans and grains before cooking them. I’m fermenting things that I never would have thought to ferment! LoL! We’re saving SO much money, it’s ridiculous! We used to spend more than I wanted to for groceries every week, and still have to go back for extras, and order take-out throughout the week! It was frustrating. Now, our meals are SO filling and inexpensive. We’ve got plenty of leftovers for lunches, and if I take one day out for grocery shopping and food prep, making dinner is a breeze every night. Mondays are turning into my baking days when I prep the food for our meals that week, and bake bread and snacks.

Meanwhile, with all that stress and frustration out of the way, I’ve been able to look for other ways to streamline our home. I put a stack of colored crates on the landing at the bottom of the stairs and instead of piling laundry in the living room, I quickly sort it into the crates (one for DH, myself, and the kiddos) and then if it makes it upstairs to the closets and drawers, great! If it doesn’t, people can still find their clothes easily and I can see if DH is running out of socks BEFORE he has to wear dirty socks to work. I’m starting to look all around the house to find other areas that I can compromise. I want the house tidy, but when I demand perfection, it becomes too complicated to keep up with and quickly gets out of control (especially with how “hands-on” we are with our parenting). So the laundry, for example, still gets done, but I don’t have to beat myself up about it not making it upstairs, neat and folded, because everybody knows where to find their clothes and if they want it folded or put away…. they can do it themselves. I hope I’ll have a few more striking revelations over the next few weeks. It feels good to be so stress-free and have more energy and patience for having fun with the kiddos. I’m finally beginning to strike a reasonable balance between enjoying the kids, and being the doting housewife that DH deserves. There was actually one meal last week that wasn’t set out on the table to eat as a family (I had some friends over so he had to serve himself while we wrapped up our play date) and you should have seen how ruffled his feathers were! LoL! He’s become so spoiled. He’s loving it. Always first to the table, fork in hand, smile on his face… If I had to pick one word to describe our little life since making these changes, I’d say “pleasant”. It sums up just how content, peaceful, and joyful our home is.

So that’s our little update from the last week. Embracing the crazy, and finding peace...

Loving Your Family With Food

My mom and I were discussing cooking for our families today, and how wonderful it is to nourish our husbands and children with fresh food, made with our own two hands. She said something so poetic, I can't help but pass it along. Food is a necessity, but it doesn't have to become a daily chore. Instead, it should be an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Feeding someone with good tasting, nourishing food made with the love and care in your heart and the skills you have learned coming from tradition and your own new learning…well you’re giving someone a piece of who you are and something that will not only nourish and sustain them but enrich them in a way they can take and carry to someone else if they choose to.

Embrace the crazy...

Tonight... we embraced the crazy and it was truly fabulous!

We had a very difficult day yesterday. Faith said goodnight to her beloved bunny for the very last time... and sent her home to be with Jesus. She held her fluffy little bunny and cried, and explored her lifeless body, talking about how "last morning Jersey's toes walked... and hopped!" She kissed her and hugged her and we said goodbye...

Today was a very difficult day with all of that stress and grief raging inside of her. Her sensory-seeking behaviors were just plain old unmanageable. She screamed, she bounced off of the walls, and she screamed some more... but finally, after dinner, I waved the white flag and truly embraced the crazy. I put Jeremiah to bed, and then I said to Faith, "let's play a game..."

Soon she was nestled in a sheet, being swung back and forth with as much force as we could muster. We rolled her up like a burrito and unfurled the sheet so she came tumbling out. Then we swung her some more. Her giggles were contagious.

Finally, we popped some popcorn and watched a movie, then I carried her up to bed (unmedicated!!), laid her in her new bed (a crib, complete with a soothing electric blanket), and started our new bedtime calming ritual. I rubbed her back, her feet, massaged her scalp... and in no time flat, she was sound asleep. The only time she's ever truly still.

It feels good! It feels so good to know that my little girl drifted off to sleep, peaceful and happy, not because her medication forced her to, but because her needs were so well satisfied that she was able to welcome sleep on her own, knowing that her mama and daddy love her with all their hearts!

So perhaps I need to remember to embrace the crazy a little more often. After all, in this house, it is the only way to stay sane...
