We had another successful salmon dinner last night. It was another garlic-y dish. I think that’s what’s keeping me from gagging on the fish taste. I am NOT a big fan of fish, usually. The garlic really seems to take the edge off. This week we’re trying “Thyme and Tomato Salmon”. I’m not sure how I’ll like that one, but I’m willing to try! I can't rave enough about www.cookingtf.com. We haven’t a “bad” recipe yet from these mailers. We’ve had a few that were even really big hits.
I also (finally) got around to making some sourdough bread and it came out GREAT! (would you believe I'd never even tried it before? I didn't think I would like it.) I’m going to try making some sourdough pretzels soon.
It’s amazing what this menu mailer has done for me. I still get to enjoy trying new, exciting and HEALTHY recipes, but I don’t have the stress of planning them myself. No food is wasted and everything is SO healthy! I’m sprouting my beans and grains before cooking them. I’m fermenting things that I never would have thought to ferment! LoL! We’re saving SO much money, it’s ridiculous! We used to spend more than I wanted to for groceries every week, and still have to go back for extras, and order take-out throughout the week! It was frustrating. Now, our meals are SO filling and inexpensive. We’ve got plenty of leftovers for lunches, and if I take one day out for grocery shopping and food prep, making dinner is a breeze every night. Mondays are turning into my baking days when I prep the food for our meals that week, and bake bread and snacks.
Meanwhile, with all that stress and frustration out of the way, I’ve been able to look for other ways to streamline our home. I put a stack of colored crates on the landing at the bottom of the stairs and instead of piling laundry in the living room, I quickly sort it into the crates (one for DH, myself, and the kiddos) and then if it makes it upstairs to the closets and drawers, great! If it doesn’t, people can still find their clothes easily and I can see if DH is running out of socks BEFORE he has to wear dirty socks to work. I’m starting to look all around the house to find other areas that I can compromise. I want the house tidy, but when I demand perfection, it becomes too complicated to keep up with and quickly gets out of control (especially with how “hands-on” we are with our parenting). So the laundry, for example, still gets done, but I don’t have to beat myself up about it not making it upstairs, neat and folded, because everybody knows where to find their clothes and if they want it folded or put away…. they can do it themselves. I hope I’ll have a few more striking revelations over the next few weeks. It feels good to be so stress-free and have more energy and patience for having fun with the kiddos. I’m finally beginning to strike a reasonable balance between enjoying the kids, and being the doting housewife that DH deserves. There was actually one meal last week that wasn’t set out on the table to eat as a family (I had some friends over so he had to serve himself while we wrapped up our play date) and you should have seen how ruffled his feathers were! LoL! He’s become so spoiled. He’s loving it. Always first to the table, fork in hand, smile on his face… If I had to pick one word to describe our little life since making these changes, I’d say “pleasant”. It sums up just how content, peaceful, and joyful our home is.
So that’s our little update from the last week. Embracing the crazy, and finding peace...
